“Staff remarked that it felt like being in a Himalayan village. Students who are heightened often become noticeably calmer as they engage with the sounds.”

Acoustic Performance

Measured output: 46 dBA at 10 metres

Many outdoor musical instruments measure 65 dBA or above at the same distance — a level that can be disruptive in school environments and overwhelming for children with sensory sensitivities. The Explorer is designed to be significantly quieter without compromising musical quality.

Every element of the Explorer's acoustic profile has been considered through an occupational therapy lens — from the tone and resonance of the bars to the mallet design — to create an instrument that invites engagement rather than overwhelming the senses.

Mounting Options

The Explorer can be installed using one of two methods. We recommend selecting your preferred option at the time of ordering.

In-Ground Post Installation — $300 per instrument The instrument is set into the ground via a 600mm concrete-set post, reinforced with welded anchoring bars. This is the recommended option for garden beds, soft ground, and unpaved surfaces, and provides the most permanent and secure installation.

Surface Mount Plate — included at no cost The instrument is secured to an existing concrete surface using anchor bolts through a steel base plate. No groundworks required. Suitable for paved areas, concrete paths, and hard courts.

No Soft Fall Required

The Explorer does not require an impact fall zone, meaning it can be installed directly into existing landscaping or paved areas without modification to the surrounding surface.

How loud is the Explorer?

The Explorer measures 46 dBA at 10 metres — significantly quieter than most outdoor musical instruments, which commonly measure 65 dBA or above at the same distance. It is designed specifically for environments where sound sensitivity matters, including classrooms, therapy spaces, and sensory gardens.

Does it require soft fall?

No. The Explorer has been independently assessed and certified to AS 4685 Australian Playground Equipment Standards. It does not require an impact fall zone, meaning it can be installed directly into existing landscaping or paved areas without modification.

Is it suitable for children with sensory needs?

Yes — and this is central to its design. Every element of the Explorer has been considered through an occupational therapy lens, including the acoustic profile, mallet grip, visual design, and volume. It is used in schools, early learning centres, and therapy environments across Australia.

Is it only suitable for primary schools?

Not at all. The Explorer is used across early learning centres, primary and secondary schools, special education settings, community spaces, and public parks. It is designed for all ages and abilities — there are no wrong notes, no musical experience required, and no age limit.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery typically takes 3 to 4 weeks from order confirmation. Contact us if you have a specific deadline and we will do our best to accommodate it.

Who installs it?

A full Technical Specifications and Installation Guide is provided with every order. Contact us if you need assistance finding a suitable contractor in your area.

Can it be funded through grants?

Yes — many schools and councils purchase Wellbeing Instruments products using existing grant funding. Visit our Funding page for information on grant programs and funding pathways that may apply to your situation.

How is it secured?

The Explorer is secured using specialised Torx security bolts, which require a specific driver for removal. This prevents unauthorised tampering and ensures the instrument remains safely in place.

The Explorer is a long-term investment in your school or community space  and for many buyers, existing grant funding can help make it happen. Funding pathways are available across every state and territory in Australia, covering disability inclusion, outdoor learning environments, and community wellbeing initiatives.
